MOTHER GOOSE RE-IMAGINED

Sponsored by the Friends of Greenwich Library "Mother Goose Re-Imagined" opened December 6, 2012 with a huge reception... artists, authors, families and children came to celebrate the opening of this wonderful new show featuring the Children's Book Illustrator Group of New York (CBIG).


CBIG was founded in 1987 by a group of  Brooklyn children's book illustrators.  Now with more than 50 members this versatile group has experience in children's publishing, editorial illustration, commercial design, animation, fine art and teaching art.

The new and re-imagined illustrations of the classic Mother Goose stories in a wide range of  mediums - collage, watercolor, oil, pen and ink and photography adorn the bright yellow walls of the gallery and will be on exhibit through January 16, 2013.  Accompanying the work on the walls will be the original rhymes and "re-imagined" texts by some of the artists.

Curators for the show include Jamee Becker, Martha Deegan and Linda Butler all members of the
Flinn Gallery art committee - a volunteer committee that selects, hangs and curates six different exhibitions a year in the gallery.  The curators have also created a cozy reading corner in the gallery for this particular show featuring a multitude of Mother Goose books - so bring the children in to read and see the work.

On January 6 beginning at 1pm there will be an artist talk, demonstration and docent tour.
Meet some of the artists and discover the inspiration and personal connections behind the work on exhibit with a special art demonstration by artist Roberta Rivera.  Artists Lisa Lavoie, Marilyn Papas, Roberta Rivera, Clare Pernice, H. Ruth Karpes and Donna Miskend, President of CBIG will participate.

All artwork in the exhibit is for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Friends of Greenwich Library.

 

Welcome to our new Flinn Gallery Eblog... we have been out of the picture for awhile getting our new website up and online.

We are online again with a whole new look.  You can now scroll through the site and see everything new about the Flinn. Our archives - alphabetical and chronological - will introduce you to the amazing  artists who have exhibited for over eighty plus years.

Our current exhibit is " Water, Water Everywhere ".  This exhibit opened on September 6th to kick off our 2012-0213 season and if you haven't seen it - get over to the library and meet us at the top of the stairs before it closes Wednesday October 17th at 5pm.

 "Water..." features six artists: John Harris, Gary Hall, Michele C. Kishita, Roger Kizik, Brechin Morgan and Suzanne Howes-Stevens.

John Harris's work explores water's physical properties - reflection, turbidity,rhythm and pattern that make up its unique viewing experience.  The result is a series of peaceful and hypnotic paintings.

Gary Hall's black and white photograph landscape prints are exquisite views of Vermont and the Adirondacks.

Michele C. Kishita a Philadelphia-based artist,synthesizes her childhood memories of rural Pennsylvania and her experiences living in Japan into mixed media landscapes.  Her recent work is inspired by the serenity of Milton Avery's ocean series and Katsushika Hokusai's waterfalls and waves.

Roger Kizik's art has graced the Flinn walls before.  His art has always ranged between the abstract and representational because he has always loved art and nature equally.  Roger imbues his work with  great wit and and humor.

Brechin Morgan grew up near the water for most of his life.  In 1998 he left Block Island on his 27 ft.cutter rigged sailboat Otter and sailed single-handed around the world.  The paintings in this exhibit come from his voyage covering 32,000 miles and 32 countries!

Suzanne Howes-Stevens finds inspiration for her paintings during canoe trips among Connecticut's marshes, rivers and swamps. Here she captures the shifting elements of land and water interacting with the sky and light.

Six very different artists with six beautifully different perspectives on water.



Our next exhibit will be "9 x 9 x 3: Textile Study Group of NY" a show that is travelling throughout the United States.  The opening reception is October 25th from 6-8pm and the show will run through November 28, 2012.  This juried exhibit features an engaging selection of 52 works of fiber art each designed to fit in a 9x9x3 inch wooden box.  The works display a wide range of fiber skills including stitching, spinning, beading, knotting, weaving, basketry, felting and paper-making.
